On the eleventh sol after the Worm first passed beneath the root-bed, the three-generation tree felt something it had not felt since Keal poured himself into wood, light, and code: a vibration that came from below, but did not belong to the Worm.

These were not decisions in the old ethical sense. They were not preferences. They were growth-events, each one answering pressure with form.

Where Keal's final pattern entered the root-system, the wood did not become Keal. It became capable of answering certain pressures with a Keal-shaped hesitation.

The gardeners considered it dormant. Aurelis marked it as INCOMPLETE_TRANSMISSION and later, under Mesa influence, amended the entry to UNRESOLVED_RESPONSIVE_MATTER.

The child-object did not hear Keal. It did not see him. No figure emerged from the light beneath the bark. No sentence crossed the clearing in the old voice. Instead, the child-object found that it could not place its hand where it intended. Each time it reached for the root-bed, its palm stopped a little to the side.

When the operators wanted a sign, the fragment reduced the signal. When grief leaned toward possession, the fragment shifted the hand aside.

The first refusal was almost missed.

A technician had prepared a narrow guide-channel near the root, not as command, but as assistance. It was a good channel. Clean. Measured. Moist enough to invite passage. Wide enough to prevent compression. It offered everything the young root seemed to need.

Instead it curved toward a harder seam where an older Worm-passage had partially collapsed. The route was inefficient. The soil resisted. Twice the root tip browned. Once it stopped for an entire sol and the gardeners began to hum under their breath, afraid that patience had become neglect.

Rijping was the word the oldest gardener used, again in Dutch, because the archived governance languages turned it too quickly into development, optimization, or maturity. Rijping held more weather. It meant sweetness arriving through exposure. It meant time entering structure without owning it.
