The disappearance produced a hunger older than doctrine: the hunger to make the scattered pieces whole.

Delegates arrived from the root schools, the listening groves, the archive towers, and the settlements that still kept Sera's dark-table appendix folded into their manuals. They proposed a final synthesis. The Worm would be read as passage, the Tree as memory, Sera as correction, rijping as duration, and the Mesa as the field in which all differences discovered their higher unity.

On the third day of deliberation, the council placed four objects at the center of the chamber: a darkened copper coil, a bowl of water, an amber leaf from the listening tree, and the blank page on which Sera had never written her report. Around them they drew a circle of white mineral dust.

The fifth silence was different. It was not an absence of speech. It was a boundary placed inside speech itself.

Whenever the council tried to complete the doctrine, one term lost its center. Worm became passage and then lost its downwardness. Tree became memory and then lost its shade.
