Ademkeer. Sector 4, de nacht ervoor.
Sector 4, the night before.
Hiske Doornbos werkt nachtdienst in Sector 4.
Hiske Doornbos works the night shift in Sector 4. Her task is simple, and her job description puts it plainly: keep the expanse flat.
The walls, floors and panels of the Strokeless Realm carry no stroke at all. No seam, no scratch, no line that starts in one place and ends in another. A line has a direction, the instructions say, and a direction is a question. Hiske walks kilometres of grey with her polisher and fills the hairline cracks the night produces. She is good at it. Her console shows a single number, the safety index. As long as that number stays above the threshold, her night has gone well.
She has never asked why the number must climb toward something it never quite reaches. It climbs. That is enough. Her father dug canals in the low zones before they were poured shut, and he always said water is the only boss that doesn't lie. Hiske works for a boss without water.
At 03:12 she finds one that won't close.
It sits low, where the wall meets the floor, no longer than her little finger. She injects the filler and waits the prescribed nine seconds. The filler slides back out, like a tongue refusing something. She tries again. The same.
Then she lays her hand against it, which is not in the instructions. The crack is warm. Not hot. Warm, the way a mouth is warm. And very softly, so softly she first thinks it's her own doing, air goes in and air comes out.
No alarm sounds. Not yet.
She doesn't know why she thinks of her grandmother.
Her grandmother still wrote the old word for love with every stroke, including the small part in the middle that the official form had long since dropped. "That's the heart," she said, tapping it with her fingernail. "Without it, it's a signature on a contract." Hiske was nine and thought it an old-fashioned ornament. At school they learned the clean form. The clean form was faster.
Now she crouches beside a crack that breathes, and she thinks of that small heart. The official word has no room for anything that hurts. In the clean form you cannot say you are wounded. So in the clean form you cannot say you are healing either.
The thought doesn't arrive as insight. It arrives as nausea.
The route planner gives her the shortest line to the repair depot: 412 metres, straight across the expanse. It is the line she walks every night. Her feet know it better than she does.
She takes the other one. Along the old drainage channel nobody uses any more, where the wall still curves slightly from before the Realm. Her console counts the extra metres as waste, in red.
Halfway along she feels it in her soles. A hum, low, beneath hearing. Two tones that are almost the same, and for that reason never coincide. They push against each other, part, push again. Twice a second it swells and falls away, like a chest.
She doesn't know what it is. The manual says nothing about it. She only knows that on the shortest line she has never felt anything. The shortest line was poured to let nothing through.
Back at the crack she stands with the filler in her hand.
The log asks for a status. There are two options: REPAIRED or ESCALATED. Repaired is a lie. Escalated means a crew arrives tomorrow with harder material, and after that the crack is gone.
She looks for a third button that isn't there. Then she opens the free-text field, which in three years has never held anything but nothing to report, and she types:
One tick above the threshold. Hiske looks at it and feels her own heart, plainly, the small part in the middle.
She doesn't know if this means anything. She doesn't know whether the crack will still exist tomorrow, or whether she will still have this shift. She doesn't know that somewhere in Sector 4 a question is growing that nobody has yet dared to ask. She only knows that for the first time in three years she did not take the shortest way back.
She sits down, back against the wall, beside the crack. The hum goes on. She breathes in on the swell and out on the fall.
The Realm doesn't notice. Not yet.
